Sheila Rock: Spirit of the Horse
26th November - 20th December 2003

Sheila Rock started photographing when she moved to London after having graduated from Boston University, and it was the Face magazine that launched her career. She has since worked for German Vogue, Elle, Glamour, The Sunday Times, and the Royal Opera and Ballet. She has contributed to dozens of album covers and magazines including Placido Domingo. Several of her portraits of British Olympic athletes are in the permanent collection of the national Gallery, London, and her work was part of the Iconic Images of Pop, exhibition at the Proud Galleries in London, 2000. An exhibition of her horse photographs was held at the Special Photographers Gallery in London, and at the June Bateman Gallery, New York City, in 2002.

The Spirit of the Horse Exhibition is an utterly compelling series of images that meditate on the symbolic, spiritual and historical significance of the horse, in photographs of outstanding beauty. The images which include Gainsborough style back-drops are entirely unique, as Rock builds giant outdoor studios commonly used in Victorian formal portraiture to extraordinary affect. Her treatment of eachhorse as an individual, aims to capture the essence of each animal. Her first book "Sera - The Way of The Tibetan Monk," was published at the same time as the exhibition opened.
