Richard Dunkley

Richard Dunkley graduated from the London Film School, and his passion for the moving picture shows very clearly in his narrative “cinematic” style that he uses to tell his story. Richard is well-known for his dance and action photography and has enjoyed much success with his self-choreographed dance imagery.
“My fifteen years of work with contemporary dancers resulted from an editorial fashion project with a model who had been a dancer. The beauty and grace of showing the clothes in fast movement changed my approach to photography so completely that I now do even my portrait subjects (mainly) in motion. From my earliest sessions with the great Kate Coyne, with whom I have collaborated for 15 years, I have always created the situations and choreography with the dancers and have endeavoured to do the work on location, on beaches, in forests and in the street, to add an extra visual dimension. I am totally convinced that dancers are the finest physical athletes, which added to their ability to visually stylise almost any movement, makes them my favourite photographic subject.”
By placing dancers in the landscape, Dunkley’s work expresses something of the human spirit, capturing a relationship between the land and the line of the movement.
A talk and slide show, ‘Move’ by Richard Dunkley will be held during the exhibition;
it has been a seminar at universities and art schools on several occasions over the last year.
