LIKE A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES, this selection of work by Ray Kyte
offers a diverse range of subjects that can reveal as much about the artist
as they do his artistry. From the single perspective taken of his shirt
collection to the remote reaches of terra firma, Kyte creates theatrical
settings and flexible scripts.
In the ‘shirt’ images, the uniformity of composition suggests an
empirical study of the properties of the material showing ‘how fabric can
become a filter, allowing light penetration to be the purveyor of drama’.
Yet, if we are defined by what we wear, these items also disclose
personality traits of the owner: unbuttoned and ‘bare-chested’ with a
predilection for Americana.
Kyte’s still lifes acknowledge the influence of Josef Sudek and the
rich history of theatrical performance of the early 20th century Czech
Avant-garde. Here, modern miscellanea have been combined with traditional
motifs of mortality resulting in images steeped in shadowy play.
In Kyte’s landscapes the notion of spectacle continues. These tableaux
are generally sited on the fringes geographically, and sometimes socially,
but there is always a narrative to be caught mid-flow. Each image is charged
with a specific memory for the artist to be interpreted anew by his
audience.
