COAST

An ecclectic collection of fine art photographs celebrating our beautiful Coast, with work by some of the region’s top named photographers.

The exhibition contains a huge variety of work, from the macro-images of Fay Godwin’s Colourwork to the pinhole photographs of Gina Glover, who explores childhood by the sea ( from her My Sea, My Sand, My World series.)

The exhibition also includes dynamic images of Derek Jarman by John Coles, coastal shots by notaries Nicholas Sinclair and John Holloway. As well as Nick Snelling abstract images taken whilst swimming.
The aerial shots of Richard Cooke, have been published in Coastline UK (Thames and Hudson), while Terry Hulf’s unexpected studies of Dunganess in the 80’s reveals him as a master of the genre.
Tim Halls images of the Sussex coast, have also been published as a book “Coast”.

Gallery 1 features work by Karine Laval, The Pool, the images are spontaneous, playful and filled with colour and life.

The Kent and Sussex Coastline has a long history for attracting many of Britain’s artists. Some names are more established than others such as JMW Turner, William Blake and the marine artist EW Cooke; more recently the list includes Derek Jarman and Fay Godwin.

Godwin lived at Pett Level, and it was here that she worked on her ‘Beach’ series and many other colour images from her book ‘Glassworks and Secret Lives’ (1998). In her earlier black and white work made in the region, many of Godwin’s classic images feature in her monograph: ‘Land’ (1985), and ‘The Edge of the Land’ (1995), which is a celebration of the British coastline.

Godwin’s relationship with this area – and its people – had a great impact on the IPG Gallery. It was through her involvement that we have found some of the great environmental photographers living and working locally, such as John Holloway and Terry Hulf.
