Richard Dunkley : MOVE
The Independent Photographers Gallery is proud to present the first exhibition of Richard Dunkley's 20 years of work with contemporary dancers and choreographers, both in the UK and the United States.

Move is an exhibition selected from work which Richard developed as a personal labour of love and as a respite from commercial photography. The shoots are choreographed by him, developed with the dancers and executed on locations far removed from the constraints of the stage. The privately sponsored New York advant-garde magazine Dance Ink published many of the images and was hugely supportive of Richard's work. The photographic exhibition includes work done with New York City Ballet,San Francisco Ballet, Ballet Rambert and Michael Clark.

After winning an award for his work from New York Photo District News magazine, Richard was invited to shoot dance related work for Vogue, The Sunday Times and other magazines, which subsequently led to commissions from numerous financial institutions, including ING Bank, Euroclear, Lloyds Bank and more recently a pan-European campaign for De Beers. Over the past two years Richard has been invited to lecture on his work at universities and colleges throughout the UK.

The exhibition will feature black and white images and more recent narrative colour work, as well as an entirely new project, Dance Reflections, shot especially for the exhibition.

After seeing the grace and poise, combined with the strength and discipline of the modern dancers in Richard's photographs, it is hard not to agree with his assertion that dancers are, quite possibly, the greatest and most expressive of all athletes.
